Web Site Ranking Tips --> Infoseek

Infoseek says that their database holds 45 million plus web pages.

Infoseek (uhhh) what can we say. They started trying to get rid of spammers in their database last year. A commendable idea. However this has backfired on them in a major way.

Since Infoseek has been on the anti spamming campaign they have tried to institute new algorithms, (the way a spider ranks your page), that will detect the repetitive use of key words or phrases. The problem happened when they instituted a policy that was too rigid. Not only the spammers where caught, but a lot of innocent sites where also penalized because of inadvertent overuse of words or phrases. They have not only penalized these sites but they have banned them entirely from their index. What has really happened is the content delivered to the searching public has decreased in its relevancy to the point most people have a hard time finding anything of use in their database.

Many people used to use Infoseek as their exclusive default search engine but now never go near them unless they are listing sites for clients. The upshot of this situation is that Infoseek has been dropping quickly in the rankings of the major search engines. They have dropped from a high of being a solid second a year ago, to a mediocre sixth place now. We hate to say anything negative about any group of people that are trying to do a job, but with this company who ever is making the decision had better stop and have a good look at what is going on. We hoped that after Disney bought out Infoseek, there would be some improvement but to date there has been none. When something new is instituted in a company and business starts to drop maybe it is time to stop, have a good hard look and perhaps go back to what was working.

Here are a few tips on how to get better rankings on Infoseek.

Key #1
Infoseek likes text, text and more text. If you take a look at the top sites, in most cases they will have pages in a size of 7k and up. This means that small pages or pages with a lot of graphics and very little text do not stand a chance. Infoseeks spider looks at title tags, then Meta description tags and then Meta keyword tags. So use your keywords or phrases in each of these. Then use your key words or phrases in the text on your page. Be very careful not to over use these, as it will get your whole site banned by them. Use your key phrases and words more often at the beginning of your text. Infoseek seems to like this.

Key #2
Infoseek will also index Alt image tags and small text but will not index comment tags. They also consider hidden text and Meta refresh tags as spam, so be careful. They are also case sensitive in the way they deliver searches to their browsers, so use upper and lower case instances of your keywords and phrases.

Good luck with this search engine because you will likely need it. A word of advice. Do not get hung up on getting good listings with this search engine as it is beginning to fall behind in the search engine wars and they are not worth spending a inordinate amount of time on.
