Web Site Ranking Tips --> Excite

Excite boasts a database of 60 million plus indexed web pages.

The Excite network of search engines is (in our opinion) second only to Yahoo and may even take over the top spot soon. The Excite group consists of Excite, Webcrawler, AOL and many smaller search engine sites. This is a formidable array of power on the Internet today, when it comes to search engines. The amount of traffic that we get from this group for a high listing is far more than any other individual or group of search engines.

Excite has gone through some major changes in the past four months. They have instituted a new set of algorithms (the way a visiting spider looks at a page) and also stream lined their database. A lot of Internet marketers do not like what has gone on with the Excite group but we think they have done a great job and will benefit from it by giving the searching public one of the most up to-date and relevant data bases on the Internet to-date.

Excite claims that they will only look at the index or main page from any root domain. What this means is that you should have your own domain name! Get one if you don't have one. At less than $0.10 per day it is an extremely worthwhile investment. Excite only accepts the main page from the main directory of your domain. You can submit all the pages you want but they will not look at them. After your main page is listed with them, they will then send around their "roving spider" to follow the links on your site and list the rest of your pages. This seems like a long process for those of us who have gotten used to living in an age of instant everything.

Getting your first page listed with them will take from three to four weeks. The remainder can take up to three months. Here are a few tips on how to get better rankings on Excite.

Key #1
Excite uses a full page indexing system and they state that you should only put information relevant to your site on the main page. We have found this to be true. Excite only indexes Title tags and Meta description tags. However, it does not hurt to have the Meta keyword tag in there. Once again try to put keywords in your title and description tags because the visiting spider will give keywords placed in these more weight than words in the body of the html document. Next lets have a look at the document body or the text on your pages. For Excite, put your main key words and phrases on the main page of your site (makes sense). Make sure you repeat these words so the visiting spider will know what your site is about. DO NOT repeat these keywords or phrases in a repetitive manner i.e. dog, dog, dog, dog, dog, and do not repeat them too often. Just put them in your text and let them flow the same way you would if you where writing an article on your product or service. We recommend that you design your site around trying to get high rankings on this search engine.

Key #2
Excite does not index frames pages. So make sure if you have a site designed with frames that you use the "NOFRAMES" tag and put the text you want the spider to see in this tag. That is the only way you have a chance of getting any kind of listing with most of the major search engines.

Key #3
Excite does not index Alt image or comment tags but you should still use the Alt image tag. Do not go over board with keyword repetition in this tag. They do, however, allow very small and invisible or same colored text on a page. Once again be careful not to over do this or to over repeat any phrase or word, this will get you caught for spamming and your page will not be listed in their database.
